Abstract

Computer Based Training technology is a promising tool to integrate and even substitute traditional learning methods. Computers can automatize many tasks generally carried out by teachers or tutors, like the choice of the learning path or the evaluation of student progress by proper tests, allowing to implement a real self-learning process. Currently two main ways to provide self-learning courses are under development. The former is the CD-ROM which can store much information but requires specialized software to grant a real interaction with the user. The latter is the World Wide Web which can be accessed through a simple browsing software but has some limitations about the amount of information which can be delivered in the short time needed for good interaction. So these media are rather uncompatible and to provide courses through both of them a double programming effort is required. The main goal of the present work was to develop a multimedia courseware which could be used equally in CD and WWW environment. Web standard tools are the core of the developed solution, allowing to access the course via a simple browser, both in local and in remote mode. While HTML and Cascading Style Sheets are used to designing the user interface, JavaScripts and Java functions realize all the functionalities needed for self-learning process like session saving and testing. The multimedia courseware is then utilised to deliver a course about Telecommunications Networks to students for self-learning sessions.

CD-ROM version 1.0.3 released

This is the 1.0.3 release of the "Corso multimediale di TELEMATICA":
  • We have added the support for true font-size definition in JSSS in order to avoid text to overflow page margins.
  • We have improved recognition of OS in JS code.
If you want to download your copy of teloc CD-ROM, click here.

This application needs Window95+, Netscape 4.0.5+, Macromedia Shockwave Plugin and a good knowledge of Italian language to understand it (no English version avaible).

Macromedia has released Shockwave Plugin for Linux (Public Beta 1). This makes possible to browser our course on Linux with the Shockwave button bar instead of its Javascript replacement. WARNING: Linux support is still in ALPHA.

Please report bugs at Enrico Papalini.

CD-ROM version 1.0.2 released

This is the 1.0.2 release of the "Corso multimediale di TELEMATICA":
  • We have fixed some minor bugs found in the first release.

CD-ROM version 1.0.0 released

This is the 1.0.0 release of the TelOK cd-rom.
The official name has become "Corso multimediale di TELEMATICA".
